The Civil Court of First Instance of Delice District of Kırıkkale Province sentenced Erzincanspor Club to pay 300 thousand Turkish liras compensation to the family of football player Cumhur Alan who died in a traffic accident on 21 February 1997.

The compensation increased to 1 million 442 thousand Turkish liras with legal interest. Lawyer Erendiz Onal started enforcement proceedings against the club.

Lawyer Onal filed a lawsuit for compensation on behalf of the family, arguing that the club was responsible for the death of Cumhur Alan. The lawsuit filed with the Delice Civil Court of First Instance lasted 13 years.

‘The club is at fault’

The court ruled that ‘in order to alleviate, soften and soothe the pain of the relatives of the plaintiff who lost their husband and father, the moral compensation should be taken from the club and given to the plaintiffs’. The judge sentenced Erzincanspor Club to pay a total of 300 thousand Turkish Liras as compensation together with court costs. With the interest applied since 1997, the date of the lawsuit, the total amount reached 1 million 442 thousand Turkish liras. On 28 January 2011, lawyer Onal initiated enforcement proceedings through Ankara 9th Execution Directorate for the collection of the money. Onal said that in case the money is not paid, ‘they will start seizure proceedings on all assets, testimonial fees and revenues of the club’.
